"Bed & Cosy Corner Natural Features" (as seen in Australian Wood Review n°39)
Virtually every piece of this project has been resawn and book matched, even the drawers’ fronts. With book matching, you end-up with panels where the grain goes in both directions, so of course you need very sharp tools and a steady hand…
The timber used for both pieces is recycled Ash. No attempts have been made to hide any borer or nail holes, sap pockets or natural cracks, on the contrary all these features were used accordingly so they could be appreciated. Every surface is hand planed and left that way if deemed satisfactory, or then scraped and lightly sanded by hand.
The carcass of the "Cosy Corner" is hand dovetailed at the top corners and straight tails were cut in the middle. The vertical dividers are assembled with sliding tapered dovetails, for accrued strength. The back is frame and floating panels, as are the doors. All drawers are hand-dovetailed front and back and the solid timber bottoms slide in grooves.
All the handles are carved with gouges and knifes and are slightly recessed in the drawers. They are made of Red Gum for the drawers and Jarrah for the doors. The shelves supports are also carved by hand and are made of Jarrah. The doors stops and latches are made of Red Gum and are adjustable with a brass screw that tensions a ball pen spring hidden under the flat part.
The finish is polish inside (blonde or solar shellac in all enclosed parts) and Danish oil on the outside.
Price is AU$3,500.00 for the Cosy Corner and AU$2,500.00 for the bed.
