After running his own Furniture design and making business during the mid 1970s, Hamish enrolled in the London College of Furniture, and spent the rest of the decade in London, teaching woodwork to youths, adults and community groups.

While overseas, he not only continued designing and making furniture but also developed joinery skills, beginning with renovations to houses in London and culminating with the building of a house in Northern Norway.

On returning to Australia in the early 1980's, he built another house at Merrijig in Victoria before returning to teaching and creative woodwork as Artist in Residence and Community woodworking activities for several Victorian municipalities.

Hamish was then appointed Workshop Manager and part time instructor in timber joinery, building construction and fine furniture design and construction Melbourne University, Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning in the early 1990's - a post he has occupied since.

During this time Hamish has been actively engaged on committees for Craft and Woodwork groups as well as exhibiting extensively his own and collaborative works at several galleries and numerous6 woodwork events. He has played major roles as President of the Victorian Woodworkers Association and its Wood Design Centre, founding Chairman of the Council of Australian Woodworking Clubs, and as a contributor to the Meatmarket Craft Centre.

Still designing and constructing timber building projects as well as furniture and other objects, Hamish continues to be an influential advocate for the promotion and development of fine woodwork in this state. His latest contribution was as Exhibition Convener for the major VWA event of the year 2004 – the inaugural Woodworks Exhibitions.

"Whether Hamish has created with wood or wood has created Hamish,
he has a passion for all that is tree. It is a respect that drives him to
salvage and rescue timber from suburban parks and gardens, and
give it new life as fine woodwork. Truly a man with 'wakened hands'”.
