BIOGRAPHY
Hamish has worked with wood for over thirty years, from designing and making furniture to building a timber framed house in the far north of Norway and carving a fairy door for the City of Knox in Victoria . He has collaborated with other artists in a number of sculpture projects, and mentored adults and children in the community arts activities and festivals of Dandenong, Knox, Warburton, Williamstown and Doncaster and Templestowe.
Every project offers new challenges and pleasures and working frequently with found or recycled materials adds to those experiences. His work is often a reaction to either the materials he is working with or a design dilemma. Many of his pieces incorporate different woods and recycled materials, often accenting particular aspects of the design with a different timber.
Having a keen interest in the individual characteristics and unique beauty of each piece of timber, Hamish cuts and dries most of the timber he uses himself. The timber takes a minimum of two years to dry and then requires extensive machining. He obtains his timber from unwanted suburban trees and is always on the lookout for appropriate trees that have been cut down.
He is currently employed by Melbourne University's Department of Architecture and Building as Workshop Manager and part time instructor in fine furniture design and construction, timber joinery and building construction. Hamish has been President of both the Council of Victorian Woodwork Clubs and the Victorian Woodworkers Association and retains a continuing interest and involvement in their activities. In 2004 he co-ordinated a large woodworking exhibition, Woodworks 2004, on behalf of the Victorian Woodworkers Association, at the newly refurbished Meatmarket Arts Centre in North Melbourne. Writing occasional articles for woodworking magazines is a relatively new additional occupation.
Hamish's works are held in collections in Australia , England , Norway and the U.S.A. He has exhibited in many group and juried shows at the RMIT Gallery, Craft Victoria's Gallery, Royal Exhibition Buildings, Eltham Wiregrass Gallery, Detail Contemporary Furniture Gallery, Qdos Gallery, Doncaster/Manningham Gallery and the Meat Market Craft Centre/Metro!
