The student who undertakes a course with John will be taught elements of design, why and how to use both hand tools and power equipment. All relevant construction techniques applicable to each individual project will be discussed and engaged according to what the student wishes to learn. John has always delighted in encouraging students to attempt projects that they initially thought beyond their reach. Once this door has been opened, the student is eager to come back week after week and in fact, come back term after term with more ambitious projects.

Students will need to bring to each class their own pencils and paper so that their projects can be designed in detail. Large sheets of paper are preferred as many parts of any project need to be drawn on a scale of 1:1 to expose difficulties of design as well as to specify relevant joinery.

The projects undertaken by John’s students are as varied as the individual. The styles vary from traditional, contemporary or fine craft. The projects include making dining tables, cabinets, chairs, stools, jewellery boxes, bench seats, sewing tables, tambour fronted cabinets, all manner of storage units, bedside tables and turned objects.
