Southern Mahogany
Mahogany my foot

It's a great Australian tradition to give uniquely Australian trees anything but Australian names (Mountain Ash being the best known and it's not like European Ash at all).

This timber is indeed called Southern Mahogany. Presumably it got this name because of its striking resemblance to Brazilian Mahogany. There are other names more Australian; Bangalay and Woolybutt. Nevertheless, Southern Mahogany it is. You figure it out. The fact is it is quite beautiful, very hard and polishes like the best in the world.

What a noble timber.

What did we do with it? - great firewood, good railway sleepers and fence posts. But furniture and parquetry? Never - until now that is. The colour ranges from salmon pink to a dark reddish heartwood. It is to be found mainly east of Bairnsdale. Increasing quantities will come onto the market in response to a growing demand from furniture makers and others who see its decorative possibilities.
